Finding the keywords for your site

Once your business is up and running, there are there are two key things you’ll want to know, indeed need to know:

1. How many visitors your site’s attracting and what they’re doing once they arrive on your site (analytics)

and...

2. Where your site stands in the search engine listings.

Getting your web site high up in the listings can make all the difference to your business. Why? Because it’s widely believed that most people can't be bothered to look beyond page three of the search results. So if your site/business is going to be found, it must appear on one of those three pages – and ideally on page 1.

Assuming for a moment that your site has been built correctly and all that has to be done to make it search engine friendly, has been done, then once it's published you’ll be eager to see how well (or not) it’s doing in all the listings.

There are approximately 27 search engines in the UK – but the most important ones (by far) are Google, Yahoo, MSN and AOL.

It takes time for a web site to make its way up the listings – sometimes as much as 6 months – and even once your site gets there, you’ll probably have to tweak things to ensure that it stays there.

The bad news is, that it’s not always possible to get to page 1, or 2, or 3 of the main search engine listings simply because your competitors have beaten you to it!

Fingers crossed.
